Hussein Chalayan MBE (or, in keeping with the original spelling of his name, Hüseyin Çağlayan) (born 1970) is a British/Turkish Cypriot fashion designer.
He was born in Nicosia (Lefkoşa in Turkish) in 1970. He graduated from the Turkish Maarif College of his hometown, and his family having moved to England in 1982, obtained British citizenship and later studied design in London. While finishing his studies at the Central St. Martin’s School of Art in 1993, his senior year collection, “The Tangent Flows“, was displayed in Browns Windows.
The Turkish designer Hussein Cahalayan sure knows how to impress his audience. After showing clothes that changed shapes using microcontrollers, switches and motors in Paris, he created a video dress that’s even more striking, showing a time lapse of a rose opening and closing up, in a spectacular display of colours and light, created from 15600 LEDs that are embedded in the fabric.
This video dress was presented at Milan Design Fair, and is now on display at the 10 Corso Como gallery in Milan, along with the mechanical dresses from the show in Paris. The designer’s creative process and experiments are changing the fashion world, and we can only guess what he’s coming up with next.
