Matthias Lange has created a concept design, called FlapCam, that offers just that a clamshell design to protect the cameras LCD display.
When folded up, the lens, display and buttons are protected against dirt and scratches but then opened out you can view images.
Depending on how much the camera is flipped open the user can either make photos of himself or take photos from above (e.g. at live concerts).
The innovative way of use of the FLAPcam is supported by an unusual visual language that encourages the user to interact with the camera in a playful way.
