Renault SA Chairman Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday that the French car maker isn't interested in acquiring Ford Motor Co.Swedish premium brand Volvo.
And he predicted that, while the impact of the crisis of confidence in financial markets on the automobile industry should be temporary, the sector, like all other manufacturers, will be negatively affected if the turmoil develops into a full-fledged recession.
He nevertheless reaffirmed Renault's goal of boosting the company's worldwide sales by 800,000 vehicles between 2006 and 2009, chiefly thanks to the no-frills Logan sedan made by its Romanian subsidiary Dacia.
Ghosn, speaking to reporters at the presentation of Renault's new midsize Laguna sedan, remarked that Renault has too much on its plate right now to consider acquiring a premium brand such as Volvo.
"Of course, one should never say never, but we haven't looked at Volvo, as we prefer to put our resources into our existing brand and products," Ghosn said.
"Renault doesn't need a new brand. What it needs is new products and technology," Ghosn said, noting that an acquisition of Volvo would cost billions of euros. "It is not a question of principle, but one of good sense."
Ford last month said it was conducting a strategic review of its Volvo brand, the third brand in its Premier Automotive Group. The U.S. automaker also confirmed that it is looking to sell its other luxury brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, as part of a turnaround strategy.
