Life Size Knitted Ferrari
22 years old art student Lauren Porter knitted a life-size Ferrari. Mainly modelled on an F355, it took her 10 months and 12 miles of yarn to put the Ferrari together.
Lauren got friends and family to help knit approximately 240 red woollen squares that she then assembled and strapped over a metal frame in the shape of the car.
She hasn't been able to find a buyer yet but managed to get the attention of gallery owner Sarah Myerscough who promptly agreed to show the Ferrari at her gallery.
Lauren may want to take a break from knitting, but has already been commissioned to knit a Christmas Tree complete with presents and fireplace.

Ferrari - Vandenbrink 599 GTO Video Is Revealed
Vandenbrink Design unveils special coachbuilt GTO
Vandenbrink Design joins the revival of special coachbuilding by presenting their design of the GTO, a tribute to the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
The GTO was designed in 2006 by Michiel van den Brink, who founded the Vandenbrink Design company with business partner Robert Koumans in the Netherlands.
The overwhealming response put the bar high, but it encouraged Vandenbrink to accept the challenge by prepairing the design for production.
The new coachwork will be handcrafted following the classic tradition in aluminium by Dutchman Alwin Hietbrink, who is worldwide known by his excellent aluminium craftsmanship in restoration and rebuilding projects of classic Italian iconic sportscars such as the genuine Ferrari 250 GTO.
Optional interior/upholstery redesign will be performed by the Dutch craftsman Henk van Lith, also worldwide known by his specialization in the making of high quality Italian interiors.
The GTO is technically based on the superb Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano platform.
In cooperation with race engineering expert EDO Competition two versions are offered:
- the 599 GTO (5998 cc / 650 hp / 630 Nm) and
- the high performance 630 GTO (6300 cc / 750 hp / 680 Nm).
Through this unique approach the GTO offers a synthesis of automotive art, craftsmanship and state-of-the-art platform and performance engineering.
Only 5 GTO's will be built for customers, guaranteeing exceptional exclusivity.
Customer interest appeared solid; first coachworks have been reserved.
Production will start in 2008; delivery to the first owner will be in 2009.
Price of a full-options 630 GTO is 993.000,- euros (excl. base 599 GTB Fiorano, ex taxes).
Vandenbrink Design:
Vandenbrink Design BV is an automotive design company, located in The Netherlands.
It is a privately owned company, founded in 2006 by Michiel van den Brink and Robert Koumans.

Nissan - Nissan NV200 Concept Van Video

A typical small van is little more than an empty box on wheels: functional, certainly, but seldom innovative or smart. But designers from Nissan Design Center (NDC) in Japan and Nissan Design Europe in the UK had other ideas. In creating NV200, the joint team have devised a concept that could revolutionise the small van market.
"A commercial vehicle has a specific job to perform, but that's no reason to design a purely rational vehicle with no warmth. In NV200, function becomes the aesthetic. NV200 is a highly efficient tool but one with a human touch." Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and chief creative officer at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.
At a glance
-Mobile office and van in one unique package
-Sliding cargo 'pod' extends to reveal...
-... IT workspace and living quarters
-Concept inspired by professional diver
When world-renowned marine biologist and underwater photographer Dr Alex Mustard sets off on an expedition, he takes with him a mountain of equipment.
He needs underwater cameras and lights for his photography plus scuba diving equipment such as wet suits, flippers, masks, air tanks and breathing apparatus. He even takes an underwater scooter for recognisance trips beneath the surface.
He carries with him computer equipment for downloading his digital images once he resurfaces and he needs mobile communication equipment to send the images to clients or research centres.
Naturally he needs a change of dry clothes and if he is planning on being out on an expedition for more than a few hours, he needs food, water and perhaps somewhere to sleep.
In fact, he takes enough gear to fill a small van. And he would benefit enormously if that van could double as a mobile office.
As far as Dr Mustard is concerned such a vehicle has been nothing more than a dream... until now. One of the stars of Nissan's stand at October's Tokyo Motor Show is the NV200, a concept for an entirely new sort of small van that answers all the marine biologist's needs.
By having no pre-conceived ideas about what form NV200 should take, the joint design team from Japan and the UK has developed a radical, futuristic, but entirely practical new concept.
In Japan, the team was led by Ryoichi Kuraoka, Product Chief Designer. In the UK, the team was led by Stephane Schwarz, design director of NDE, exterior designer Martin Uhlarik and interior designer Hironori Oyama. And although developed to answer one user's very specific requirements, the basic concept has serious potential for all manner of different customers.
From the outside, NV200 is the epitome of a modern van. A cab-forward design, the wraparound grille blends into upswept swage lines on either side of the cabin. Dramatically rising side windows accentuate a high waistline and underline the van's practical, load carrying ability. NV200 sits on a usefully long 2820mm wheelbase and is 1840mm tall, providing a practical, roomy load space.
But it's the details that really count. At the heart of NV200 is a patented sliding cargo pod which is divided into a number of separate areas into which different pieces of diving and photographic equipment can be stored.
"We wanted to create a flexible toolbox for professionals," says Schwarz. "NV200 is practical and functional but aesthetically pleasing at the same time."
The pod is latched inside the shell of the load area when the van is being driven. But upon arrival at its destination, it slides out rearwards to allow easy access to the storage zones. The pod is deployed manually with the aid of hydraulic rams, and sits securely on integrated 'drop-down' legs when fully extended.
As well as housing diving gear in separate 'wet' lockers, the pod holds four air tanks and there's an area specially shaped to hold the underwater scooter securely. Lockable roller blinds protect the contents, while valuable camera equipment can be accessed either from within NV200 or from outside the pod.
As the pod is withdrawn from the van, the area left behind is transformed into a mobile office and IT dock. A computer table drops down from the side of the van to reveal two LCD screens upon which images can be edited. The front passenger seat swivels backwards on a single curved rail to face the table.
A shockproof briefcase made from rugged ribbed plastic houses a laptop. When not in use, it docks into a side of the van beneath the worktable. A magnetic clipboard is attached to the opposite wall of the workspace, while moveable storage boxes are mounted in all three doors.
Natural light for the work surface comes from a small side window above the bank of screens and from a large domed skylight in the roof of the van. In tropical climates, the skylight can be diffused to prevent a build up of heat within the interior.
The end of the pod facing the inside of the van - it forms a bulkhead behind the front seats when the pod is not deployed - has hanging space for dry clothes. It also houses a small refrigerator, drop down sink unit and first aid kit. NV200's tanks hold enough water to supply a shower, fitted on the outside of the pod, to allow diving equipment to be washed after use.
Power for the computer, shower, 'fridge and other electrical fixtures comes from a small generator housed within the van. This, in turn, is charged by solar panels situated on the roof of the pod.
When the pod is deployed, the solar panels are directly exposed to daylight. But even when the pod is pushed back into the van, the panels line up beneath the skylight. In this way, power can be generated in daylight hours whether the vehicle is stationary or not.
A two-man tent - accessed from outside NV200 - is housed at the base of the B-pillar behind the driver's door, while fillers for fuel and water are housed within the opposite B-pillar. The driver and passenger doors open conventionally, while access to the workspace is via a single sliding door on the passenger side.
The cockpit area reflects form and function. The skeletal aluminium seat frames are covered in a washable contoured material similar to the fabric used in sports shoes, with a 3D texture for extra grip.
Large open storage areas run the width of the van beneath the instrument panel and control cluster. Sensors within the storage zones detect movement and illuminate the entire area as soon as a hand or an object is placed in or near the shelves.
With no centrally mounted rear view mirror needed, its location has been filled by a small colour TV screen. A rear-facing camera - a familiar Nissan feature that up until now has been used as solely a reversing aid - projects the view behind the van to the screen at all times.
Above the front seats is a glass panel incorporating a wave pattern. It bathes the interior in a diffused light, while any outside movement casts shadows in the cabin that resemble life under water.
On either side of the panel are two forward-facing glazed holders into which high-powered professional underwater torches can be slotted. When parked, the torches provide a floodlit area ahead of NV200.
Most the materials, textures and colours used throughout NV200 reflect the materials, textures and colours used in the diving world. The exterior has a scratch resistant matt satin finish in a steel grey colour to emphasise the 'toolbox' nature of the project.
Interior materials are either hardened lightweight plastics or rubberised fabrics finished in a dark grey with acid yellow highlights. The glass is also tinted yellow.
Underwater and organic references can be found all over NV200. The purpose-made 20in alloy wheels feature have six 'arms' that appear to grip the tyre itself, octopus-fashion. The tread pattern on Goodyear's tyres - also specially created for NV200 - incorporate octopus suckers onto a trainer-style sole.
Inspiration for the translucent ribs of the wraparound grille also came from underwater creatures while the design of the tail and indicator lenses reflect layers of an onion. Liberal use of warning signs and instructions found on the exterior of NV200 were borrowed from the practical graphics found on diving equipment.
The designers in the UK have allowed themselves one small visual joke. Opening the sliding door reveals the legend 'Mind The Gap' on the step up into the work area... a reference familiar to anyone using London's Tube network.
Perhaps the only area not directly influenced by the ocean, is the wooden floor of NV200. This is finished in a hardwearing but entirely natural ebony, bringing a touch of warmth to an otherwise working environment.
Although the NV200 has been designed to suit the specific needs of one user, the principle behind the concept has wide ranging potential. The team has identified mobile libraries, greengrocery stores, florists and even field ambulances among possible users of the pod.
"Although NV200 might, at first glance, appear to be a flight of fancy, the more you study its potential the more you realise it is an entirely practical and feasible project," says Nakamura. "Nissan prides itself on designing its cars to fulfil the needs and requirements of its customers. For NV200 we have taken that guiding principle quite literally and created a vehicle for one specific customer. But it is a totally adaptable and flexible concept that could have applications in a number of areas of the market," he adds.
And the verdict from Dr Mustard, the man around whom the concept was created? "Perfect... just perfect. It even answers needs I hadn't realised that I had. I only have one question: when will NV200 be put into production?" he says.
NV200 also features an environmentally friendly clean diesel engine. It is equipped with a number of safety systems based on Nissan's Safety Shield concept, including Back View Monitor and Distance Control Assist System.

Nissan - Nissan Round Box (R.D/B.X) Video

Round Box
Youth-Oriented Compact Convertible Provides Occupants Senses of Speed and exilleration
The Nissan Round Box, with its compact convertible design, represents a new take on open-air motoring, providing exhilaration for all passengers - not just the driver - through its uniquely shared experience of fresh air stimulation, a sensation of speed and easy-to-use high-spec features.
The Round Box features an environmentally friendly turbocharged direct injection gasoline engine mated to Nissan's advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). It is also equipped with a number of safety systems based on Nissan's Safety Shield* concept, including Around View Monitor and Distance Control Assist System (DCAS).
The inspiration for Round Box's interior, which features the "right sized" space to facilitate communication between the four occupants, was not another vehicle, but a social environment. "The car was inspired by the lively atmosphere of a sports bar," explains Tatsuya Shiosaki of Nissan's Exploratory and Advanced Product Department. "In a sports bar everyone is focused on the game for pure enjoyment. They are totally free of the pressure and tension felt by the players who are actually playing the game on the field. A sports bar affords an enjoyable, stress-free space where friends can experience a sense of togetherness. Simultaneously, they can enjoy thrilling excitement like being on a roller-coaster yet without any risk involved. That is the sort of emotive world the Round Box is intended to provide."
A Social, High-Spec Interior
The most striking aspect of the Round Box interior is the seating area - with front bucket and rear bench seats designed to provide support with a sense of relaxation. The design of the seating area is unique, with the comfortable bench-style seat cushions creating a sense of oneness with adjacent passengers, as well as front seatbacks that are separated to facilitate easy communication between all occupants.
"The seats have a bench-style lower half and a bucket-style upper half. Normally, such a combination would be impossible," said Kaoru Sato, Associate Chief Designer in the Product Design Department. "The seat design combines a casual bench seat, offering exceptional ease of entry and lateral movement from either side, with a supportive seatback that holds the body securely in place. We believe this combination is perfect for young people who want to satisfy their high-tech needs in a simple way. While the combination may appear contradictory at first glance, when you actually combine the elements, it produces a harmonious effect and represents a way of creating new value. The Round Box is full of such experimentation."
Round Box's relaxing ambience is enhanced by a mixture of flat and round curved surfaces throughout the interior, a motif that includes the instrument panel, steering wheel and other appointments. The name "Round Box," in fact, was inspired by these unique curved surfaces.
The Round Box interior also features an innovative, interactive "Play Catch" system, which allows the driver and passengers - including those in the rear seat - to share entertainment and driving information. The system utilizes a large touchscreen display positioned in the center of the vehicle and an additional monitor located in the center of the instrument panel. The "Play Catch" system encourages the driver and passengers to easily exchange information with each other - just like "playing catch." For example, passengers can search for shops or restaurants through the Round Box's navigation system, then send the driving route and instructions to the driver's monitor. It's a unique, enjoyable way of involving all the occupants, while allowing the driver concentrate on driving by carefully coordinating the two display systems.
A Unique Exterior Combining a Variety of Elements
The Round Box's youthful design mixes a variety of design elements, from the open upper cabin area to the rugged lower body - a combination that evokes a sporty yet relaxed feeling, as well as a sense of substance.
Round Box features tires placed at each corner to maximize interior room, enhance stability and to help create its unique "wide open" look. The open-air feeling is enhanced by a three-section removable roof panel, which can be stowed away in Round Box's ample truck.
Contributing to the shared sensation of speed are unique "road surface windows," small glass panels placed close to the ground on both sides of the Round Box. These windows provide passengers with a view of the rapidly passing road surface, without the risks of road contact associated with a motorcycle or other non-closed vehicles.
The new Round Box is a social, exhilarating vehicle design, combining value, style and a sense of speed and open-air freedom - a totally new and unprecedented approach to the concept of enjoyable mobility.

Top Gear Is Back - Clarkson Test Volkswagen Golf GTI W12
This Sunday, Top Gear returned to the telly in a flurry of tyre smoke, horsepower and bleeped-out swear words.
Jeremy getting behind the wheel of one of the daftest cars ever to come out of Germany: the VW Golf W12.
Volkswagen Golf GTI W12

- VW claims a top speed of 202 mph
- 6.0l W12 12-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine mounted in the back seat of the GTI
- 650hp and 553 lb-ft. of torque (!)
- with the flared fenders the car sits over 6 feet wide and only 4.6 feet tall
- 19" wheels with 295 rear rubber and 235 front rubber
- the fenders are flared 3.15" at the rear
3.7 seconds, 202 mph, 553 pound-feet
Its 6.0-liter twin-turbo engine is located lengthwise between the front seats, converting the traditional front-drive Golf into a classic mid-engined race car. A six-speed automatic gearbox feeds a maximum output of 553 pound-feet of torque to the rear axle. Such force catapults the GTI to 62mph in a scant 3.7 seconds. Stay on the accelerator, and the biturbo engine will carry the car to over 200 miles per hour, putting the GTI W12-650 in the rarefied air of dedicated exotic cars.
6.2 feet wide, 235-width tires in front, 295-width in rear
Under its 6.2-foot spread and 4.7' tall body, Volkswagen engineers and designers united technologies across the spectrum of Volkswagen AG for the first, and perhaps only, time. Each mechanical piece was originally conceived and designed by Volkswagen AG, showcasing the unequalled breadth of Volkswagen's technological prowess.
235-width tires on the front wheels are mounted to 19" gloss-turned "Detroit" GTI wheels, custom-made to fill out the deeply sculpted fender flares. At the rear, the gigantic 295-width tires extend much farther than standard GTIs to bring the GTI W12-650 a properly aggressive stance.
2.75" lower, 6.3" more broad
The wheels are tucked 2.75" further into the gigantic wheel arches, the shoulders of the fenders becoming coupe-like in their proportions. Says Klaus Bischoff, Director of Volkswagen Design: "In the back, the show car is wider by about 3.15" on each side. The standard model already has a strong shoulder line and arched flare, but, as with a sports car, we pulled the fenders more strongly outward."
He continues: "Our goal was clearly defined - despite the dramatic technical changes, the GTI W12-650 should remain clearly a classical GTI. The design of the Golf is like a fingerprint. If it smears, the character of the car is destroyed. We would not allow that to happen." To that end, as many parts as possible were carried over from production GTIs such as the headlamps, doors, hood and tail lamps.
C-Pillars as part of the engine air intake
"Our largest challenge," says Klaus Bischoff, "was to supply the six-liter mid-mounted engine enough air without diluting the silhouette of the GTI. Side inlets had to be used and optimized for breathing, and the aerodynamics of the car had to be reworked so that we could achieve sufficient cooling at the rear axle. We did not want to set an enormous tail wing on the car."
In both cases, a trick helped. Bischoff continues: "The strongest Golf design elements are the C-pillars, and it was exactly there that we needed the inlets for the engine air intakes. The C-pillars were redesigned by hand in such a way that we allowed the rear windows to cant slightly inward. So engine air is sucked in through a gap between the window glass and the C-pillar. Cooling is taken car of by an enormous radiator in front as well as by the ducts located in the flares." Each part of the revised bodywork appears at first sight to be a production GTI part, however they have been carefully designed to have increased functionality without sacrificing aesthetics.
Carbon fiber roof is a diffuser
Innovative and thoughtful construction of the bodies prevented the clean lines of the GTI W12-650 from being ruined by a roof-mounted wing. Says Klaus Bischoff: "This GTI moved the wing inward. The roof is part of an enormous diffuser, which provides sufficient down force on the rear axle. It is made of carbon fiber and forces air over and under the tail spoiler to obtain a perfect amount of pressure on the rear axle."
The bumpers of the show car show strong lines and clever design, as well. In the back, enormous exhaust openings mark the car as a GTI W12-650. Two chrome-plated dual pipes frame the exhaust opening in the rear. At the front, a red-line grille draws upon the heritage of the very first Golf GTI produced.
Interior with racing ambitions
Today's GTI drivers would feel at home inside the GTI W12-650. The leather and Alcantara seats are new. Three round gauges mounted in the center stack harkens memories of the Ur-GTI. Transparent "flip up" switch guards are used on the switches for functions such as the ESP override. To prevent mis-activation, the covers must first be flipped open with the index finger. Likewise the racing fire extinguisher integrated in place of the glove box reminds driver and passenger that the GTI W12-650 is a serious race car. For weight reasons, the door panels have been removed and replaces with lattices which allow a compete view of the door mechanics.
